Alexander Candleish Sutton

Alexander (“Alec”) C. Sutton (b. Oct. 30, 1885, d. June 19, 1952) m. Lena Rivers Whitesell (b. Dec. 12, 1892, d. Mar. 21, 1958) on June 6, 1910. They are both buried in Grandview Memorial Cemetery in Rock Hill, S.C.. Lena was the daughter of William Eli Whitesell and Martha Ann Mitchell and was born in Spray, N.C.. Lena’s daddy, Eli, moved to Fort Mill prior to 1890, and went to work in the mill as mill superintendent for a while. Then he opened a store across the road from the mill; he ran the store and was mayor of Fort Mill in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. He moved out near the Sutton property in 1905.

Alec was a farmer and trader. He bought land and sold it. One piece of property which he bought was 76 acres down on the river which previously owned by his father. He raised corn there but eventually sold this land to Duke Power in 1927/8 which is were the dam is now (Fort Mill side).

Alec must have started dating Lena when her family move near the Sutton property because they were married in 1910.

One story about this Sutton. His daddy wanted to build a big barn which was particularly high (3 stories). Alec helped on the roof with another man named Sharon (everyone called him Mr. Sharon) who was about the same age as Alec (about 45). Apparently, there was some type of argument between the two because Alec hit him in the head with a crowbar. Well Mr. Sharon slid off the barn to the ground and everyone was afraid that he would die so they took him to the hospital. But the man ended up all right.

The home place land which Alec had purchased from his aunt, Sally Leonard, he later split between his children: Jimmy (40 Acres), Mack (40 acres), Lena Joe (40 acres), Jack (35 acres), Doug (26 acres), Bunnie (26 acres), Alice (26 acres).

Alec and Lena had the following children:
